The screwbean mesquite appears to be pretty normal at first glance; it isn’t until it fruits that it shows how unique it really is. Its pods form a tight spiral, which is thought to have evolved as a defense against seed predators. Growing about 20 feet in height, it has bi-pinnately compound leaves, long yellow flowers in spikes, and prominent white thorns. It is native to several areas in the U.S. and Northern Mexico. The bark is also characteristic, as it is stringier than other mesquites, which gives it a messy look. You won’t see tons of them around Tucson, so be sure to appreciate the 3 we have on campus!
