Pinus pinaster, commonly known as the maritime pine, is native to the western Mediterranean region. It is widely planted for use in man-made forests and is an important turpentine and resin crop. Since the late 18th century, Pinus pinaster has been planted for land-reclamation purposes. This species grows moderately quickly and withstands forest fires, making a prime candidate for this application. The U of A is proud to have three of these interesting trees on campus!
