Pine trees are conifers, which are a type of gymnosperm. Instead of flowers, conifers have male and female cones. The male cones look like 4 inch candles, decorating the ends of the branches. Fast growing, this large evergreen tree, known as the Canary Island pine, can reach over 90 ft. in height. As you might have guessed, it is native to the subtropical Canary Islands and does not tolerate hard frosts well. It is, however, one of the most drought tolerant species of pine, surviving on less than 8 inches of rainfall a year. The leaves are 8-12 inch long needles. These long needles, red furrowed bark, and large size give this tree its shaggy, haunted woods appearance!
