This beautiful cactus, known as the cochal, is native to the Baja California peninsula of Mexico. It has intimidating spines and an intriguing architecture. Spines are actually modified leaves, which grow out of an areola. On the cochal, there is one large central spine surrounded by 5 smaller ones. Growing 6-8 feet tall, it has small green to white flowers which are followed by small red fruit about the size of a marble. They have an acidic flavor similar to currants and can be eaten in many forms, including drinks, empañadas, candies, and desserts. There is only one on campus and it fruits in late May! It can be found in the historic Krutch Garden in the center of the mall.
