This medium, ornamental tree, commonly known as the tea tree, is native to the tropical northern regions of Australia. Though it is often found around river banks, it has been known to survive in a variety of adverse conditions, including drought, waterlogged soils, and abnormally high salinity levels. A member of the Myrtaceae family, it has a weeping form and bright green, glossy foliage. Moderately fast growing, this tree can reach 50 feet in height. While all these traits are good, its eye-popping pink clusters of flowers are what make it desirable for landscaping. But what is truly interesting about this plant isn’t its looks either; it’s the bark! White and paper like, the bark peels easily off the trunk. Sheets of it were used by aboriginal people to wrap their food and waterproof their homes.
