Commonly known as the Crape Myrtle, L. indica is generally a small tree, rarely growing over 15 feet tall. The multicolored bark, while considered attractive, is thin and easily damaged. What really sets this tree apart is the abundance of colorful, flashy flowers it produces. Usually pink or purple, these flowers are easy to spot all over campus. Besides being a popular ornamental plant, it is commonly used in pecan orchards to attract beneficial insects to mitigate pest problems. There are over 260 of these decorative trees on campus.
