A member of the palm family, the Chilean wine palm is the only species in its genus. Endemic to a small area in Chile, this rare palm can reach heights up 82 ft. A specimen of the Jubaea chilensis at the Kew Gardens in England is currently the world record holder for largest indoor plant. The name actually originates from the use of its sap as a fermented beverage, but it can also be boiled down and sold as a sweet syrup called “miel de palma.” A slow growing tree, the U of A’s only specimen is still rather short, but we are hopeful it will thrive in the future!
