This South American plant, commonly known as the hedge cactus, can easily be a focal point in any xeric landscape. With time, it can grow to be quite arborescent-- over 20ft in height with robust branching. It grows well in Tucson but might need some cold protection, as it is only tolerant to about 20 degrees. As with many cacti, this plant enjoys full sun and little to no watering at all. Known for spectacular floral displays, the large white flowers open at night and can remain open for most of the next day. These nocturnal blooms are the reason some people also call this cacti the Queen of the Night. The U of A is home to 49 of these impressive cacti, so be sure to look for them in our landscape!
