Characteristics: A small woody-based shrub typically growing up to about 20in (50cm) tall and slightly larger around. Stems are herbaceous and smooth. Leaves are arranged both in pairs and alternately depending on the location on the stem. They are deeply and pinnately lobed. The tips of the lobes are tipped with a spine. The plant has an unpleasant smell produced by oil glands on the leaves. Flowers are composites held alone on the end of a long stem. They are mostly yellow with hints of orange and red. When pollinated, the seeds have fluffy material that carries them on the wind.
Natural History: Found below 4000ft (1219m) along dry washes, on bajadas, hillsides and mesas. Blooms spring to fall.
