Although his small evergreen tree is rather pretty, the Chihuahuan orchid tree isn't really an orchid (orchids are epiphytes, not trees!). Rather, it’s a member of the Fabaceae family. It does, however, have attractive pink or white flowers that are small and form in clusters. While it is both fairly cold hardy and drought tolerant, if watered once a month, it can grow to be a showy bloomer. Its small, 2 lobed, gray-green leaves also are somewhat unique, but do not attract the eye like the flowers do. At a mature height of only 8 feet in full sun, this tree has no thorns and can make a flashy, friendly, shrubby addition to any green space.
