When you think of grass, you might not think of bamboo. You also probably don’t think of a plant over 50 feet tall. But Oldham Bamboo, like all true bamboo, is in the grass family, Poaceae. This giant species originated in Taiwan, but now is grown all over the world as an ornamental. It doesn’t flower every year, and sometimes even dies after blooming. During the thousands of years people have utilized bamboo, it has been food, fabric, a construction material, and even a popular medicine. In landscaping, it is most often used as a dense screen ranging from 20-50 feet tall at maturity.
