TOTW Tamarix aphylla

This controversial tree is commonly known as saltcedar or Tamarisk. Originally from Africa, this tree is now considered invasive in Arizona. However, it used to be a working tree, brought over as a windbreak. It makes a good windbreak because it has dense, scale like, foliage and does well in rows. It also makes for a noxious weed because it is fast growing, a heavy water user, and is allelopathic (meaning it actively inhibits the growth of other plants). It readily invades riparian areas and can quickly outcompete the native vegetation. Even though this tree has a notorious reputation, it still can be a sturdy, tough, yet elegant tree.
