TOTW Prosopis velutina

Tucsonans may recognize P. velutina's multiple twisting trunks, the dusty, green, doubly compound leaves, or the yellow spikes of flowers. Commonly known as the velvet mesquite, this tree is not only visually striking, but abundant with versatility. A member of the Fabaceae family, it produces pods that can be ground into flour, and sweet flowers that can be made into medicine and candy. Its bark is used for baskets and the wood is world famous for its use on the grill.
