The chilicote is a desert shrub (or small tree) known for its bright scarlet flowers. They are especially popular with hummingbirds, as you might expect from a red tube-shaped flower. Its leaves are stiff, leather, and spade-shaped with a dull green color. It is a member of the Legume family, but its pods are notoriously poisonous. Native throughout the Southwest, it thrives in the hot desert environment but can be sensitive to colder temperatures.
