Resilience - You Belong.

Plants are great examples of teamwork.

Each member of the plant community has a role to play.

Plant Sciences Concept:

Each member of the plant community has an important role to play and each one is needed for the group to thrive. Every plant contributes something that strengthens the community. These contributions include “ecosystem services” such as the production of oxygen, support for pollinators, and climate regulation. When one plant struggles with a challenge from climate, or disease, for example, others in the community who are adapted to the changing condition must provide back up so that the needs of the community will be met. Thus, having a community of diverse members with different abilities ensures the integrity and function of the wider ecosystem during hard times. The greater the biodiversity, the greater the resilience and chance for the community to thrive.

Horticultural Applications:

Growing a wider variety of species will naturally deter pests and diseases, creating a healthier and more productive garden. In the same way that diverse plant communities in natural settings thrive, selecting diverse plants in cultivated landscapes is key to developing a healthy and happy garden where all the elements work together to secure resilience in the face of change. Aim to increase the biodiversity in your garden by planting multiple different species that invite and provide homes and food sources for different insects, animals, and microorganisms. Each organism can belong and contribute to the function of the whole system.

"The Tree of Life analogy is a perfect representation of the concept of belonging. In many cultures around the world, trees are considered symbols of life and growth. The Tree of Life represents an organism that is rooted deeply in the earth, drawing nourishment and strength from the ground. The human parallel reminds us of the importance of being rooted in one's values, beliefs, and community. For me, the symbolism of the tree of life reminds me to be grounded, and send down deep roots in a place that feels natural and well suited to me. Most humans innately desire to have this feeling of  belonging, a place of safety and ease...a community, a home."
