School of Natural Resources Seminar: Connecting People, Plants and Place

Tanya M. Quist, PhD, Director University of Arizona Campus Arboretum and Peter Dourlein, AIA, LEED AP, is the recently retired University of Arizona Associate Vice President, Planning, Design & Construction and University Architect will present an engaging session featuring the symbiosis of people, plants and place evident in the much celebrated ENR2 Building. 

In this talk, we will explore key concepts in sustainable landscaping and biophilic design as we learn about the inspiring and award-winning University of Arizona Environment and Natural Resources 2 building. The central concepts covered in this talk highlight the connections and dynamic interactions that can exist between the natural environment, the built environment, and people. When these three are thoughtfully considered through transdisciplinary collaborations between stakeholders, and design, construction, and maintenance personnel, the resulting systems is more in harmony with nature and natural processes, allowing people, plants and building greater resilience. You will appreciate the beauty and functions of the landscape as green infrastructure, the need to match plants with suitable microclimates to optimize the generation of ecosystem services and ways the building was designed and constructed to support both plants and human occupants, while reducing environmental impacts.
