Characteristics: A heavily branched, bushy grass. Stems are long and thin. Inflorescences are
delicate panicales at the tips of stems, with a reddish color.
Natural History: Grows between 610-1829m (2,000-6,000ft) along desert washes, in flats,
grasslands, bajadas, hills and cliff faces. Blooms late summer to fall. Provides forage for grazers
and shelter for small animals due to its dense bushy growth form
Cultivation Notes: Sometimes available at local nurseries. Its bushy growth form, delicate
appearance, and reddish hue when blooming makes it an excellent choice for landscaping and
wildlife gardens. Spread seeds on the soil surface and keep moist.
