Family: Asteraceae
Compound: Gut ser
Synonyms: Gutierrezia polyantha
Geographic Origin: AZ
Characteristics: A small perennial shrub, with a dense, heavily branched form, up to 30cm
(11.8in) in height. The base may be woody, while stems are smooth and green or tan. Leaves
are narrow, and often dead or absent lower down on stems. Flowers are small composites
arranged in involucres at the end of the stems. When blooming, the whole plant often appears
completely yellow, as the whole outside of the plant is covered in small yellow flowers.
Natural History: Grows from 457-1219m (1,500-4,000ft) in grasslands or creosote dominated
flats. Flowers from spring to fall.
Cultivation Notes: There is little information about the propagation of this species available. It is
not typically sold at nurseries. Try collecting wild seed and spreading it on the surface of the soil
in a pot and watering frequently or directly in the ground during the rainy season. Tolerates
poor soils and partial to full sun. If it can be sourced, it would make an excellent plant for native
landscaping because of its compact form, dark green foliage and yellow flowers.
