More Than Just A Pretty Place

The responsibilities of an arboretum on a busy college campus are varied and complex! As a University program, a major focus is development of educational programs and research. Our location in the Sonoran Desert provides opportunity to build knowledge that illuminates and inspires environmental stewardship and creates a living laboratory for modeling urban sustainability. While these important activities serve student, community and global audiences, there is even more happening behind the scenes. The complexities of sharing the campus grounds with a diverse array of stakeholders requires additional administrative service for dozens of other campus units who interface with the campus landscape. We provide vision, leadership and expertise for collections development, design, historic preservation and landscape management. To ensure our goals and responsibilities are clearly communicated to a broad array of audiences, we have developed the guidelines posted here. Feel free to read through these documents and begin to appreciate a new dimension to the UA Campus Arboretum. You're sure to realize there is more than meets the eye!
