Geographic Origin: SW Canada, W US, Mexico
Characteristics: A small perennial bunch-forming grass. During the growing season, the plant is
a vibrant green, topped with red/purple. Seeds have 3 large awns giving them their name.
 
Natural History: Grows between 305-2135m (1,000-7,000ft) in sandy to rocky soils. Found in
flats to bajadas or hillsides. Often abundant along roads due to the extra moisture available.
Blooms spring to fall.
 
Cultivation Notes: Occasionally available at local nurseries. Prized in landscaping due to its
attractive form and color. Tolerates full to partial sun and drought, though it looks best when
given more water. Spread seeds on the soil surface and keep moist.
