Historical Context:

The Floss Silk tree from South America is common in the nursery trade and used as a street tree in southern California. Its large, spiky trunk helps to hold water and its glossy leaves and large white flowers present a striking appearance. The fruit of this tree is the source of kapok, used for life vest stuffing. Several others of varying ages and flower color can be found on campus.
