70 This is the first African sumac ever planted in the western hemisphere. It was planted in Arizona during the 1920s and is the largest in the state. This well-adapted desert evergreen tree was introduced from South Africa to Arizona by Homer LeRoy Shantz, a former dean of agriculture who later served as president of the University. The tree is an important addition to Southern Arizona plantings. It is quite drought resistant.
