A new multi-level parking structure at the corner
of Helen St. and Highland Avenue might have destroyed a large Hackberry
tree (Celtis reticulata) located in a private yard at 1409 E. Helen. In response to some concern from members of the North
University neighborhood, the Campus Arboretum began the process of assessing
the tree, evaluating its chance of survival if moved, and advocating for
its relocation north onto the same block of Mabel. The tree has a spread
of 46 ft, a circumference of (two trunks averaged) of 4.5 feet, and is
32 ft tall. Using methods detailed in our Tree
Evaluation document, several Certified Arborists on staff at the University
of Arizona determined the tree’s dollar value of over $16,000 prior
to transplanting. In June 2004, the tree was successfully moved by Civano
Nursery. Photos by E. Davison. Director - Elizabeth Davison
